JOB GOAL: 

The Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Leader provides leadership in developing, implementing, and evaluating the progress of equity and inclusion initiatives throughout the school’s policies and practices, professional development, events, and offerings for students and other stakeholders. The DEI Leader acts as a resource, advisor and strategic planner helping the school to be a community that values a diversity of people, perspectives, and ideas. The DEI leader nurtures relationships with students, staff, trustees, and parents to ensure understanding, support, and implementation of the school’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and a sense of belonging at International School of Beijing.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Primary Duties:

  • Develop policies and practices that promote and increase inclusive behaviors and establish a sense of belonging within our community of students, families, and staff.

o   Serve as Head of School’s appointee on ABAR Committee Leadership Team, supporting organizational management of meetings, staff committee member recruitment and elections, and formulation and implementation of action plans

o   Conduct review of School-wide DEI Statement and support Board of Trustee Policy on Social Responsibility and Inclusion.

o   Support engagement of students, parents, and staff on inclusion and belonging in connection to ISB’s mission statement. (Examples include parent workshops on belonging, implementation of Dragon Storytellers, parent read-aloud program celebrating multi-culturalism and multi-lingualism)

  • Build the capacity of staff to advance equity and inclusion through ISB’s mission statement with a focus on curriculum, classroom practices, interrupting incidences of bias and racism, and engaging in inclusive behavior that enhances our sense of belonging.

o   Design and deliver Professional Development for annual orientation with newly hired staff.

o   Internal advising and consulting with school leaders in highly sensitive situations, which may include attending meetings with individual families.

o   Connect staff to important external PD opportunities and applying learning to ISB.

o   Co-lead whole school professional development of building Intercultural skills with the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) tool with the Office of Learning.

o   Advise on integration of DEI principles to whole school professional development, including bystander intervention.

  • Support student learning in areas related to DEI and social emotional learning

o   Co-facilitate student club related to DEI, currently called iLEAD (Inclusion Leadership Equity Advocacy and Diversity).

o   Support social emotional learning curriculum during the school day (Depending on experience, options may include being a Mentoring Coordinator in Middle School or High School or facilitating activities, Student Council support, or coordinating activities during divisional lunch times)

o   Co-design and implement annual student leadership conference on advocacy and leadership for schools across Beijing at ISB (ICON Summit) in coordination with ISB Sustainability Manager

o   Build capacity of student leadership to support professional development, interruption of identity-based harm, establish a culture of belonging and establish ISB as a leader in diversity, equity, and inclusion strategies.

  • Enhance ISB’s recruiting process with a focus on addressing bias in the recruitment process, maintaining and growing a diverse workforce, and establishing clear desired skills and qualifications to seek candidates that uphold our shared DEI values.

o   Develop and build capacity of staff to deliver trainings related to addressing implicit bias in hiring.

o   Collaborate with HR Director to develop and monitor measurable goals for recruiting and retaining a diverse workforce

o   Lead DEI Panels for recruitment efforts for school leadership positions and support consistency in recruiting candidates that align to DEI values.

  • Oversee DEI progress monitoring, reporting and maintaining a budget

o   Develop and track measurable outcomes for DEI initiatives and report progress to Board of Trustees, school leadership, and community.

o   Oversee mechanisms to monitor identity-based harm incidents for alignment and continuous improvement to child safeguarding policies and practices.

o   Propose and oversee annual budget and resource allocations in alignment with other Head of School initiatives and school programs.

o   Coordinate with Communications Department to publish news stories, weekly messages, internal newsletters, ISB webpages and larger communication strategy.

o   Ensure DEI practices comply with local regulations and international school accreditation standards.

Collaborates with:

  • Guide the implementation of ISB’s DEI action plan in alignment with the school-wide mission and vision, Head of School goals, and ABAR Purpose Statement.
  • Partner with Senior Leadership, Human Resources, the Director of Learning, Principals, Counselors, Divisional DEI Specialists, and the ABAR -Committee to align policies, hiring practices, data analysis, and schoolwide initiatives.
  • Report progress to the Board twice annually and advise on policy development.
  • Collaborate with parents to strengthen school–home partnerships that support belonging for all students.
  • Partner with the Child Safeguarding Team to integrate policies, progress monitoring, and practices in addressing identity-based harm.
  • Coordinate with external partners (e.g., Association of International Educators and Leaders of Color (AIELOC), Council of International Schools (CIS), and International School Services (ISS) and consultants) to strengthen ISB’s DEI practices and contribute to global DEI efforts in international schools.

 Additional responsibilities:  Perform other job-related duties as necessary

REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES

  • Commitment to furthering diversity, equity, and inclusion at International School of Beijing 
  • Aptitude for building and maintaining positive relationships with students, educators, and parents
  • Demonstrated ability in leading and facilitating groups and implementing initiatives
  • Capacity to organize and deliver effective workshops and presentations to diverse audiences
  • Ability to effectively use organization strategies to prioritize tasks and delegate them when appropriate.
  • Ability to use and analyze quantitative and qualitative data and document results
  • Ability to manage thoughtfully the personal, political, and institutional dynamics related to diversity, equity, and inclusion issues in international schools
  • Demonstrate culturally responsive leadership with a deep empathic concern and compassion for people

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • BA required; MA in teaching (EY-12) or related area preferred
  • Expertise in current trends and research related to diversity, equity, and inclusion in a school setting
  • Experience leading, teaching, and facilitating diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives and projects
  • Experience working in a diverse, multilingual school setting, preferably international schools
  • Evidence of on-going professional education in the field of DEI work
  • Qualifications/advanced study in DEI field of study
  • Demonstrates intercultural skills and culturally responsive communication and leadership.
