We are currently seeking an experienced professional to join our team in the role of Digital Platforms Engineering Lead.

Significant effort has already been made towards the iWPB strategy to deliver exceptional products, service and experiences to our customers.

The Engineering Lead is Accountable for the Engineering practices and deliverables at Digital Platforms level in the location. The position will work in partnership with the Digital Platforms Value Streams Leads to drive world class technology engineering and ensure engagement across all key programmes and deliverables in scope for 2025.

The role will also be responsible for: developing an Engineering and Technology strategy and roadmap for Digital Platforms. Taking in to account key technology wide priorities e.g., maintaining and developing iWPB Technology-wide micro-services hosting platform, service resiliency and management, cloud-based technology solutions and the removal of legacy systems); sponsoring and driving the continued adoption and maturation of DevOps and agile principles; and ensuring the Digital Platforms are well maintained, stable and secure maintaining and developing best in class service resiliency and management, adopting AI technology solution and driving the platforms evolution across Digital Platforms.

Impact on the Business


• Provide leadership and accountability across a globally dispersed population of Digital engineers embedded in a variety of agile teams and direct responsibility to form and management of engineering capabilities in Shanghai.


• Establish and develop strong technical leadership and relationships with architecture and platform functions to influence and agree approaches to tooling and other design principles.


• Ownership and accountability for the design and definition of the Digital Platforms Engineering practice and Strategy and the Standards and Governance that underpins these principles.


• Working with Platform Value Stream Leads and iWPB Technology leadership, providing technical leadership in driving transformational change and innovation across the Engineering landscape.


• Represent Digital Platforms across the broader iWPB and Technology community in relation to Engineering development, delivery and standards.


• Define, develop and practically implement state-of-the-art strategies to solving complex and ambiguous problems using modern set of technology platforms across multiple countries.


• Build a great engineering team that delivers excellent results to difficult problems across multiple functions and geographies.


• Design, develop and implement state-of-the-art approaches to solving complex and ambiguous problems using modern set of technology platforms, delivery disciplines and devops mindset.


• Global implementation and coordination of iWPB digital initiatives, working with global and regional and business / service lines leads / Technology functions leads to provide optimised global services adjusted to address regional demand.


• Manage the annual budget spread between designing and developing new services (Change The Bank) as well as managing and supporting existing services (Run the Bank).

Stakeholders – Internal and External


• Improve technology delivery i.e., leading adoption and new capabilities whilst managing the risk of failure.


• Manage an effective relationship with partners and third-party vendor to ensure successful delivery and efficient cost management.


• Creates and manages strong and trusted working relationship outside of WPB through strong relationships within the broader HSBC group.


• WPB channel and digital representation in all technology and business executive forums


• Lead the roll out of new ways of operating and the skills development across the Engineering capability within Digital Platform

Leadership & Teamwork


• Optimise resources globally to create an integrated team leveraging the capabilities of staff in both central and regional teams.


• Manage the efforts of global teams including all aspects of data processing design, development, acquisition, testing, conversion and production support.


• Institute global platforms, promote technology sharing and leverage operating environments to achieve greater cost efficiency.


• Provide senior management with overall comfort level and technological positioning of the company relative to the mission and industry.


• Lead and develop an effective global team through communication, performance management, development plans and reward/recognition practices.


• Cultivate an environment that supports diversity and reflects the HSBC brand.


• Able to manage multiple applications to tight budget and time frames.

Operational Effectiveness & Control


• Ensure technology goals are identified, communicated, documented, agreed and delivered in the most cost-effective manner possible through to the completion of the successful pilot deployment.


• Identifying key risks, issues and interdependencies and provide appropriate mitigation strategies.


• Supporting audit / independent programme assessments as required


• Ensure HSBC is not put at any operational or reputational risk.

Role Context


• Coordinate with Value Stream and Sub Value Stream Tech Leads to provide insight on pre-existing solutions.


• Promote re-use of readily built platform solutions and global components.


• Manage end to end Engineering delivery of underlying technology capabilities for iWPB Technology


• Direct responsibility for between FTE within iWPB Technology


• Works closely with iWPB Technology CIOs, COO & Technical teams


• Responsible for everyday performance management for all functional reports globally


• Direct and indirect team responsibility of reports in multiple locations


• Work distributed broadly across Group locations to optimise staff capabilities.
