PURPOSE STATEMENT Please notice this is 1 year contract. The Manufacturing Capability Manager reports to External Supplier Capability Manager.

This position is accountable for lead the build and qualification of new manufacturing capability at third party suppliers to support the delivery of projects in the New Category segment. The position would be based in Shenzhen, China, in proximity to the majority of the suppliers for this segment, requiring a strong understanding of Chinese culture and proficiency in both Chinese and English languages. This role is responsible for;

  • Establishing new manufacturing processes at BAT's selected suppliers manufacturing locations
  • Qualification of manufacturing processes in-line with BAT's standards and procedures, providing the data and analysis to support this
  • Providing input into the product design to improve manufacturability or reduce cost of goods whilst delivering product performance to brief
  • Liaising with the project team on the status of the activities taking place in supplier sites, providing timely reports and attending project team meetings as required
  • Ensure that the tier 2 and sub-suppliers manufacturing capability is also proven to avoid risk to the overall delivery of the project
  • Participation in supplier selection processes to identify and select partners for new projects. The scope of this role covers: Projects: 5-10 NC projects at any one time, across Discover/Develop/Deploy stages. Suppliers: Multiple 3rd party device, consumables and material/component suppliers. Reports: No direct reports, however expected to work in a virtual project team influencing others to support overall delivery. Budget: Management of capex budgets in excess of $5mn per project. PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES This role is to be the Project manager responsible to establish commercial manufacturing capability with external manufacturing and assembly partners who are predominately based in Asia (80% China, 20% other). Engagement starts at the concept design phase all the way through to establishing a sustainable commercial manufacture process that is then handed over to business as usual team, and includes the following activities: 1) Product Design:
  • Ensure that external suppliers are integrated into the product development process and their technical expertise is utilised in the relevant technical forums
  • Design Failure Mode Effects Analysis (DFMEA) and remedial action plans
  • Process Failure Mode Effects Analysis (PFMEA) and remedial action plans
  • Design for Manufacture (DFM)
  • Design for Assembly (DFA)
  • Mange the work steam risk log and remedial action plans internally and externally
  • Manage all work stream reporting and change controls internally and externally 2) Supplier Selection
  • Support Procurement in the audit of potential suppliers, focusing on both the technical and manufacturing capability to support the business requirements.
  • Ensure that the NGP external manufacturing handbook is applied and up to date
  • Provide technical input to the Request for Information (RFI) and Request for Proposal (RFP) process.
  • Perform the external manufacturing impact assessment (as part of the overall Supply Chain Impact Assessment) against NPI project briefs and key assumptions. 3) Manufacturing Capability Build
  • Manage the deployment of the Quality control planning systems (Please note that there several variations on this system i.e. Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP): Design for Six Sigma (DFSS), Design for manufacture (DFM))
  • Ensure that the external manufacturing partner has the correct equipment, processes and procedures to comply with the agreed Quality control plan
  • Liaise with Innovation Quality to ensure that external supplier Production Parts Approval Process (PPAP) and PSW submissions are agreed to and accepted by Quality
  • Ensure that the suppliers are capable of serial production through a defined process (Commissioning, Qualification, Verification) and ensure relevant approvals are sought at project stage gates
  • Develop and agree handover criteria for acceptance of new product manufacture into serial production, including product and process quality criteria. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION i. Context/Environment This role is specific to NC (New Category Products) which includes electronic devices (Vapour or Tobacco Heating Products) and consumables (liquids, cartomisers or tobacco sticks) and other novel nicotine related products. BAT strategy hinges on the rapid deployment of new products and this role is integral to the realisation of these products in the market. The role needs to work closely with Global Quality, External Suppliers, R&D Product Development, NGP Operations, Supply Chain, Procurement and other subject matter experts. Knowledge of the competitive landscape will be advantageous to understand trends in technology and drivers for new product and process development. ii. Knowledge, Skills & Experience Required:
  • Degree level in Engineering or equivalent Applied Science.
  • 7 or more years of experience in consumer electronic/device product design and manufacture and/or automotive, medical devices or aerospace industries.
  • Detailed experience in managing NPI projects, in cross functional teams and with external suppliers.
  • Experience in the deployment of APQP in the supplier base and all volume related tools to include PFMEA, DFMEA, 8d, 'run rate', capability study, control plans and Lean Six Sigma.
  • Experienced in management of supplier across a broad range of technical processes that could include electronics, injection moulding, cosmetic finishing, painting, plating, anodising, FATP assemblers etc.
  • Experience in managing supply across multiple tiers of suppliers.
  • Knowledge in statistical analysis of quality data and reporting.
  • Experience in supplier validation systems and processes.
  • Experience of regulatory compliance requirements for electronic consumer products (FDA requirements would be of additional benefit).
  • Ability to manage multiple relationships with internal customers and stakeholders (e.g. R&D, new product introduction, Quality).
  • A high degree of personal resilience, drive and flexibility.
  • Fluent written and spoken Mandarin and English.
  • Professional chartership (e.g. chartered engineer) preferable. iii. Key Success Factors
  • Lead the delivery of new manufacturing processes at our suppliers on time and to designed capacity.
  • Provide accurate data to demonstrate the capability of the manufacturing processes.
  • Manage the sub suppliers at all relevant tiers to support the development and ramp up of the production at the assembly partner.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and cooperation with project teams and key stakeholders across functions, escalating risks and issues as they arise.
  • Understanding of 3rd party supplier's capability levels and risks to provide management information to enable project go/no-go decisions for project teams.
