General Manager – SMS / Value-Added Services
to lead strategy, operations, and commercial expansion. This role requires a leader with a strong track record in the telecom ecosystem, deep industry knowledge and relationships with all major hubbing platforms as well as key relationships with the major MNO groups,
Role Purpose
The General Manager will be responsible for the full ownership of the SMS/VAS business unit. This includes defining and executing the growth strategy, managing existing carrier/operator relationships, optimizing revenue streams, and identifying new business opportunities globally. The GM will serve as a key member of the leadership team, reporting directly to the board, and will have P&L responsibility for the unit.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
- Define and execute the long-term strategy for the SMS/VAS business across multiple markets.
- Evaluate new technologies and market trends (A2P, P2P, P2A, OTT messaging alternatives).
- Drive innovation in value-added services, ensuring competitiveness in a shifting landscape.
Commercial Development
- Expand and strengthen partnerships with telecom operators, aggregators, and global enterprises.
- Negotiate and close high-value commercial agreements with key accounts.
- Oversee business development pipeline, identifying opportunities for diversification and growth.
- Ensure client retention and revenue maximization through proactive account management.
Operational Excellence
- Oversee day-to-day operations, ensuring delivery of services to carriers and VAS clients.
- Collaborate with technical teams to resolve issues, improve processes, and enhance service delivery.
- Implement performance metrics and reporting systems for monitoring business outcomes.
- Drive operational efficiency while ensuring compliance with the local telecom regulator, GSMA and the ITU
Team Leadership
- Manage, and mentor a high-performing, small geographically distributed team.
- Foster collaboration across sales, operations, product, and finance functions.
- Represent the business unit internally, ensuring alignment with group strategy.
Financial Accountability
- Own the P&L for the SMS/VAS business unit.
- Monitor revenue, margin, and profitability targets.
- Prepare regular business performance reports for the executive board.
Requirements
- 10+ years of experience in telecom, messaging, or value-added services, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
- Proven track record of managing large-scale SMS/A2P/P2P/P2A businesses or carrier partnerships.
- Strong understanding of global SMS trends, regulatory frameworks, and new revenue models.
- Demonstrated experience in closing high-value contracts with MNOs, MVNOs, and global enterprises.
- Solid P&L and budget management experience.
- Excellent leadership, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills.
- Fluent English required; other major European or Asian languages are an asset.
- Flexibility to travel and operate in a global, fast-paced environment.
