Supplier Quality & Development (SQD) Senior Manager – China
As part of McLaren Automotive's continued growth and its multi-propulsion strategy, we are expanding our Supplier Quality & Development (SQD) function in China. This management role will provide local leadership to the China-based SQD team, comprising of SQD Engineers and Senior SQD Engineers, to ensure robust supplier quality performance across new and existing vehicle programmes. The role will be pivotal in managing day-to-day team operations, resolving supplier escalations, and liaising with UK-based SQD leadership and technical partner(s) in China.

As the Senior SQD Manager, you will oversee the full scope of McLaren's supplier quality activities across China, providing matrixed leadership and guidance to a team of SQD Engineers and Senior SQD Engineers. You will manage complex supplier relationships, drive escalation resolution, and ensure alignment with global SQD strategies. This role requires strong leadership, strategic thinking, and the ability to build and scale processes for a growing China-based SQD function.
What You'll Do:
Team Leadership & Operational Management
- Provide matrixed leadership to the China-based SQD team, overseeing day-to-day operations, resource allocation, and cross-functional alignment.
- Provide coaching, mentoring, and performance management for SQD Engineers and Senior SQD Engineers.
- Develop and implement SQD processes tailored to the China supplier landscape.
- Support recruitment and onboarding of new team members.
- Ensure consistent and effective application of core quality tools and methodologies across the team: APQP, PPAP, FMEA, MSA, SPC, 8D, DMAIC
- Review and validate supplier PPAP submissions and ensure alignment with programme timing plans.
- Guide the team in conducting Design for Manufacturing (DFM) reviews and process feasibility assessments.
- Oversee supplier tooling readiness, process capability studies, and control plan validation.
- Ensure robust application GD&T and interpretation of engineering drawings

Supplier Escalation & Relationship Management
- Act as the escalation point for critical supplier issues impacting quality, delivery, or launch readiness.
- Lead supplier visits and escalation reviews, engaging supplier senior leadership to resolve major concerns.
- Manage supplier quality relationships including technical partners in China
- Unlock roadblocks and facilitate cross-functional engagement to support programme delivery
Cross-Functional & Global Collaboration
- Liaise with UK-based SQD leadership to align on global quality strategies and programme objectives.
- Collaborate with global and local Engineering, Purchasing, and Programme teams to support supplier nomination, design feasibility, and launch readiness activities in China.
- Represent the China SQD team in global governance forums and cross-regional initiatives.
Governance
- Where appropriate oversee supplier audits (annual and nomination), supplier performance reviews and governance meetings.
- Ensure compliance with McLaren standards and regulatory requirements.
- Develop and implement SQD processes tailored to the China supplier landscape.
- Drive standardisation of best practices across the team and supplier base.
- Ensure compliance with IATF16949, AIAG standards and McLaren Product Development process(MDP).
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives across the supplier base.
- Support strategic sourcing decisions and supplier nominations
Programme Support & Risk Management
- Ensure supplier readiness for new product launches and series production.
- Implement risk mitigation strategies and monitor supplier KPIs.
- Support APQP and PPAP activities for high-impact suppliers.
- Provide escalation support for major programme issues.
What You'll Bring:
Leadership in China-Based Automotive Quality Teams
Proven experience leading and developing supplier quality teams within Western OEMs or joint ventures in China, including multi-site team management, coaching engineers, and scaling SQD functions tailored to local supplier ecosystems.
Strategic Supplier Quality Management
Extensive experience managing supplier quality across sourcing, industrialisation, and series production phases, with a strong track record in overseeing APQP and PPAP execution, supplier concessions, and "Plan for Every Part" readiness
Deep Technical Expertise Across Commodities
In-depth knowledge of automotive manufacturing processes across BIW, chassis, electronics, and propulsion, including hands-on use of quality tools (APQP, PPAP, FMEA, MSA, SPC, 8D, DMAIC), GD&T, tooling validation, DFM reviews, and process capability studies.
Global & Cross-Functional Collaboration
Skilled in working across Engineering, Purchasing, Programme Management, and Manufacturing functions, aligning local execution with global strategy, and liaising with UK/global SQD leadership to ensure strategic alignment.
Supplier Escalation & Relationship Management
Strong background in resolving critical supplier issues through escalation visits and senior-level engagement, with experience managing relationships with technical partners and strategic suppliers in China
Quality Systems & amp Compliance
Strong working knowledge of IATF16949, AIAG standards, and end-to-end supply chains within automotive OEM networks, with experience in scenario planning and risk mitigation.
Matrixed Leadership & Influence Without Authority
Skilled in leading cross-functional teams without direct authority, influencing decisions, negotiating priorities, and driving action across matrixed organisations
Communication & Stakeholder Engagement
Excellent communication skills in Mandarin and English, with the ability to tailor messaging for technical, operational, and executive audiences, and manage both upward and lateral stakeholder relationships.
Digital & Reporting Competence
Experienced in managing digital reporting workflows and supplier documentation using tools such as SAP, Excel, and programme dashboards to maintain visibility and alignment
Essential Functional / Technical Skills:
- Language: Fluent in technical and conversational Mandarin and English (oral & written)
- Qualifications: Degree-level qualification in a technical engineering discipline; advanced qualifications preferred.
- Leadership: Demonstrated experience in leading supplier quality teams and coaching engineers
- Commodity Expertise: Deep understanding of supplier manufacturing processes, tooling, and quality risks across the full range of vehicle commodities
- Core Quality Tools: PPAP, MSA, APQP, FMEA, SPC
- Structured Problem Solving: 8D and DMAIC methodologies
- Quality Management Systems: IATF16949 and AIAG standard practices
- Digital & Systems Competence: Familiarity with IATF16949, AIAG standards, GD&T, SAP, CATIA, and Microsoft Office applications.
