Job Purpose
The Manager, Design Engineering - Asia will be responsible for leading a multi-disciplinary team of packaging designers and engineers, influencing, and driving innovation for the Packaging Design Engineering organization based in SE Asia. Their primary focus will be leading design engineering efforts to develop packaging solutions, that meet client requirements, through global distribution processes. This individual will provide thought leadership—helping to build, and execute against, the vision and strategy for the Veritiv Design Engineering team and will partner with functional teammates (domestically and globally) to support packaging development initiatives, ultimately driving increased sales and serving as a consultant and subject matter expert for engineering and validation.
Job Responsibilities
- Be the expert on packaging system design and validation.
- Lead an effective work environment by sharing a clear vision, setting objectives, holding individuals accountable and driving success.
- Oversee a staff of design engineers and engineering technicians, maintain quality staff by interviewing, hiring, coaching, training, succession planning, and developing the team, also ensuring adherence to standard operating procedures, quality requirements, guidelines, and policies.
- Oversee all operations of the Design Labs in Mainland China and Taiwan —including DOE development, statistical analysis, data acquisition, LCA, and FEA simulation studies. They will be responsible for establishing corporate standards for design engineering & testing methodology, consultation test plan development, and client test protocol selection and maintain industry certifications and memberships (ISTA). Will also partner with Engineering and Testing leaders in the US to develop global strategies and drive consistency.
- Manage and provide direction for technical projects—including project objectives, design briefs, action plans, timing, risk management, contingency plans and resource utilization.
- Guide customers, and our sales organization, to the appropriate design and test procedures that meet customer's needs and regularly communicate and present to customers, sales teams and senior leadership.
- Lead continuous improvement, per 6-Sigma best practices and Lean (5S).
- Manage labor productivity, inventory, safety and quality control—supporting design engineering, material analysis, and simulation studies.
- Track, prioritize and manage workflow for all design engineering requests.
- Develop and maintain Design Center - Asia budget, operating policies, and procedures.
Additional Responsibilities & Qualifications
- In addition to driving the core design engineering business, this role will partner with functional and cross-functional groups to support other strategic business initiatives, as well as partner with program managers, design teams, leadership and customers to help provide holistic solutions that contribute to the overall vision.
- Strong background in Design for Manufacturing (DFM), Design of Experiment (DOE), Finite Element Analysis (FEA) Simulation, and Life Cycle Analysis (LCA)
- BS in Packaging, Materials, Engineering, or related field. Advanced degree a plus.10+ years demonstrated experience in Packaging or related field.
- Expert in ISTA, ASTM, TAPPI, ISO, & Amazon APASS testing protocols.
- Expert in packaging materials, prototyping, & production processes (Corrugated / Folding Carton, Plastic Thermoform / Injection Molding / Blow Molding, Foam Fabrication, Molded Fiber, Flexible Film, Rigid)
- Must be bilingual in Mandarin and English (speaking, reading, writing).
- Experience in problem solving and analyzing data to support effective decision making and project optimization.
- Maintain a working knowledge of international and domestic packaging laws, regulations, test standards, and compliance guidelines.
- Positive, proactive, and motivational.
- Ability to build trust with team and partners.

- Travel up to 20%.
Work Experience
- 10-15 years of related job experience.
- 3-5 years of related experience of successful supervisory/management experience required to motivate and develop direct reports, as well as size up new talent.
- Ability to manage multiple projects, work under pressure, and adapt to sudden changes in the work environment.
- Ability to work quickly and efficiently.
- Excellent verbal, written, people, and diplomacy skills are required.
- Experienced in providing leadership to others regarding work related systems, processes, and challenges.
- Experience of interpreting strategy and policy in order to set and deliver objectives.
- Experience of planning, managing and organizing resources within short/medium timescales within the overall policy framework.
- Must be highly motivated, flexible and deadline driven.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Software program experience with SolidWorks, ArtiosCAD, TOPS and Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, Adobe Pro).
- Strong customer service skills (friendly, courteous and helpful).
- Strong planning and organization skills are required.
- Strong problem-solving and attention to detail skills are required.
- The ability to communicate with all levels of the organization.
