Main Purpose of Role
The Operations Manager plays a pivotal role in ensuring the efficient and safe operation of the plant. With a focus on health and safety leadership, employee development, and operational excellence, partnering with cross-functional teams, including HR, Technical, Planning, Safety and Finance, the Operations Manager ensures alignment with organisational goals and compliance with quality standards. Through strategic planning, KPI tracking, and risk management, they optimise production processes, control costs, and support business growth. Their hands-on approach, coupled with strong leadership and collaboration skills, fosters a culture of engagement, safety, and continuous improvement throughout the organisation
Key Responsibilities
- To be a positive role model for health and safety at the plant, taking a lead in initiatives such as GEMBA walks, risk assessments, behavioural safety reviews and incident reporting.
- To partner with the Health and Safety Manager to drive improvements in safety performance and to reduce the overall risk to visitors and employees.
- Lead the operations team through several direct reports ensuring that all employees are trained, motivated, clear on their expectations and working safely and effectively to meet their goals.
- To provide input to HR on employee benefits packages and compensation structures to ensure competitiveness within the industry and alignment with organisational goals.
- To collaborate with HR and plant leadership to define job roles, identify staffing needs, and participate in the recruitment and selection process for production staff and managers.
- To implement training programs and career development initiatives to enhance the skills and capabilities of the operations team and to ensure all members of the operations team receiving performance reviews and regular one to one reviews.
- To partner with the Plant Manager and Human Resources department on employee engagement initiatives including the development of actions to drive employee engagement, moral and improved performance.
- To ensure the required steps are taken to manage poor or sub-standard performance within the operations department, partnering with human resources when necessary to ensure legal compliance.
- To be a visible leader for operations, to engage on a regular basis with factory employees and create an environment where everyone feels, valued, safe and supported.
- To track key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure production efficiency, quality, and other relevant key performance metrics, providing regular reports to management on operational performance and corrective and improvement actions as necessary.
- To work with the Operations Planning and Procurement Manager to develop both long- and short-term production schedules that are aligned with sales forecasts and resource availability.
- To generate strategic operational plans using a 12 and 24-month horizon that supports business growth, cost reduction and increased competitiveness.
- Monitor and control inventory levels to optimise stock levels while minimising excess work in process, raw materials and finished goods.
- To Identify areas for process improvement and implement strategies to enhance efficiency, reduce waste, and increase productivity.
- To implement and maintain world class housekeeping standards across the plant.
- To ensure compliance with quality control measures to ensure that products meet required standards and specifications.
- To take an active role in customer complaint resolution processes.
- To coordinate with suppliers to ensure timely delivery of raw materials and components required for production.
- To partner with the Technical Manager to ensure the timely and prioritised maintenance and repair of manufacturing equipment to minimise downtime and ensure smooth manufacturing operations.
- To partner with the Technical Manager on the implementation of continuous improvement methodologies such as Lean manufacturing to drive operational excellence.
- To generate requests for investment in manufacturing operations through the RFC process, partnering with the Technical Manager and Financial Controller to submit robust business cases.
- To identify potential risks to production operations and implementing strategies to mitigate them, such as developing contingency plans for supply chain disruptions or equipment failures.
- To carefully monitor and control operational costs and identify opportunities to reduce costs without compromising on safety or quality.
- To collaborate with new product development teams to ensure smooth transition of new products from design to manufacturing, including setting up production processes and ensuring readiness for mass production.
- To ensure all manufacturing processes comply with relevant external accreditations i.e. ISO9001.
- To ensure all changes are controlled using the change management process.
