ROLE SUMMARY

What are the key objectives and expectations from this role?

The Prototype Engineer I leads Tech Block projects development within the prototyping team, leveraging prototyping experience, techniques, and technologies to design, build, verify, and iterate on prototypes until an effective technical solution is achieved. This role also leads reverse engineering analysis projects, collaborating with EE, ME, and PE (Process Engineer) to deliver BOM lists, COGS, and in-depth technical analysis reports. Meanwhile, It works closely with cross-functional teams in BAT to ensure the on-time and in-full (OTIF) delivery of the aforementioned activities.

What is the direct impact of this role on the team or organization?

This role has the ownership of leading Tech Block development and product tear down analysis, enables innovation and Tech Block development OTIF delivery with close collaborations within and outside the team. Drives the project development from concept to tangible solutions following PLM process with enhancing collaboration and reducing risk.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Lead Tech Block projects/activities across the product lifecycle, including ideation, design, development, and integration of prototype devices and components.
  • Lead technical prototyping design, fabrication, and verification; manage technical meetings; ensure technical requirements and documentation are in place to meet new device, product, and project objectives.
  • Review external prototype designs to align with product and business needs.
  • Collaborate with internal and external partners to optimize prototype development through DFM/DFA; integrate prototyping and advanced rapid prototyping methods into device/component design processes, balancing manufacturability, cost, and quality to deliver consumer value.
  • Design tools and equipment to support prototype fabrication and subsequent manufacturing of pipeline products, leveraging practical capabilities.
  • Assess the prototyping landscape to identify and evaluate tools/methods; integrate prototyping into design processes to streamline development.
  • Provide technical support and guidance on prototyping techniques within the team; develop skills in prototype design and fabrication to enhance alignment with business and product needs.
  • Lead product teardown analysis projects, collaborating closely with the team to ensure on-time, in-full (OTIF) delivery of ME&EE BOMs, COGS analysis, and in-depth technical reports.
  • Maintain and strengthen IP focus; interface with the Patent team to develop robust patent applications and identify IP-uncovered areas for operation and growth.

EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE

ESSENTIAL

Experience Required

  • 5+ years of experience in consumer device product development, product validation, and innovative technical solutions.
  • In-depth knowledge of product development, manufacturing techniques/technologies; familiarity with rapid prototyping methods is a plus.
  • Hands-on experience in component integration, as well as design evaluation of consumer devices.
  • Extensive experience with manufacturing and prototyping tools, equipment design, and related methods.
  • Proven experience in applying development techniques to optimize prototyping and subsequent production as a plus.
  • Understanding of emerging rapid prototyping technologies and methods to support rapid design development as a plus.
  • Experience and understanding of product teardown analysis or benchmarking as a plus.
  • Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams in a global organization.
  • Knowledge of regulatory compliance requirements for consumer devices as a plus.
  • Demonstrated track record in delivering product innovation in collaboration with external partners.

Technical / Functional / Leadership Skills Required

  • Self-motivated to work both independently and within a team environment
  • Strong communication and presentation/report writing skills
  • Proficient in office software (work, excel, ppt)
  • Able to work on multiple activities and deliver against agreed priorities
  • Able to influence and coordinate cross-functional teams, including internal and key external partnerships, critical in the delivery of programmes and initiatives to ensure the most effective use of internal/external resource/expertise

Education / Qualifications / Certifications Required

  • Bachelor's degree or above in relevant fields of study (i.e., technology or engineering)
